Gambits are fun to play, put immediate pressure on an opponent and teach important lessons about time-versus-material.
They also tend to be most effective in games between players below master level, ie the vast majority of chess games.
The 'secret' part of the repertoire is that I will be doing my best to avoid the obvious and well-known, for example the King's Gambit against 1...e5 and the Morra Gambit against 1...c5.
Indeed, several of the gambits I will cover are very unlikely to appear in the libraries of even the most ardent chess bibliophile.
That means I, and you if you start playing some of these lines, will be creating opening theory as you go along. Your opponents, with any luck, will be even more in the dark.
The series starts properly tomorrow with a little-known gambit against the Sicilian.
