Torgny Olsson (1902) - Spanton (1896)
New London
1.d4 d5 2.Bf4 e6 3.e3 Bd6 4.Bg3 Nf6 5.Nd2 c5 6.Ngf3 0-0 7.c3
Obviously 7.c3!? is a reasonable move, but I was surprised to discover it was played 1,775 times in the 1,871 games to reach the position in ChessBase's 2025 Mega database |

7...b6 8.Bd3 Bb7 9.Ne5!? Nc6 10.f4 Qc7 11.Bh4 Be7
Stockfish17 and Dragon1 like 11...Ne4!? 12.Nxe4 dxe4 13.Bxe4, and now an apparent novelty in 13...cxd4!?, when 14.exd4 Nxe5 15.dxe5 Bxe5!? 16.Bxb7 Qxb7 is equal, as 17.fxe5? fails to 17...Qxg2 18.Rf1 Qe4+ 19.Qe2 Qxh4+. White could try 16.Bxh7+ Kxh7 17.Qh5+ Kg8, but after both 18.fxe5 and 18.Qxe5 Black gets good compensation for a pawn, according to the engines, eg 18.fxe5 Qc4 leaves with White having major problems getting castled.
12.Bxf6!?
This is the engines' top choice.
12...Bxf6 13.Ndf3 c4!?
This is Dragon1's top choice, at least for a while, but after the move is inputted on the screen, both engines dislike it. However they cannot agree what should be played instead - perhaps 13...Nxe5 (Stockfish17) or 13...Rad8 (Dragon1).
14.Bc2 b5 15.h4 h6!?
The engines fluctuate between this and 15...Bxe5.

16.g4
The engines give 16.Ng5!?, claiming at least the upper hand for White, the point being 16...hxg5? runs into 17.Bh7+! Kxh7 (17...Kh8 also allows mate) 18.Qh5+ Kg8 19.hxg5, followed by 20.Qh7# or 20.Qh8#.
16...Bxe5 17.dxe5
The engines quite like all three recaptures, but more-or-less come to settle on 17.Nxe5 as best.

17...Qb6?
The engines reckon 17...d4! 18.exd4 f6 is strong, eg 19.g5 fxg5 20.hxg5 Nb4!? 21.cxb4 Rxf4. They also prefer other moves, eg 17...f6 and 17...b4.
18.Qd2?
Correct is 18.Nd4, solidifying the centre, after which Black has little with which to meet White's kingside attack.
18...b4?!
Pushing the d pawn at least equalises, according to the engines.
19.h5?
Nd4 is still strong, but the engines reckon White is also better after moves such as 19.Rg1 and 19.0-0.
19...d4!
At last.
20.exd4 Nxd4 21.Nxd4!?
Probably objectively better is 21.Qxd4, but the engines give Black at least a slight edge after 21...Bxf3.

22.g5 bxc3 23.bxc3 hxg5!? 24.fxg5 Qc5!?
Black is better after this, although the engines prefer other continuations, without settling on one, although 24...Qa5!? is always near the top of choices.
25.Qh2!?
25.Qh2!?
This comes to be Dragon1's top pick, but Stockfish17 prefer 25.Qf4 or 25.Qe3.
25...Qd5?
Missing the strength of 25...Qa5!
26.0-0-0 Be4 27.Nf5?
The game is completely equal after 27.h6, according to the engines, eg 27...gxh6 28.Rh1! Bxh1 29.Bh7+! Kxh7 30.Qxh6+ Kg8 31.g6 fxg6 32.Qxg6+ etc,

27...Qb7??
Probably not 27...Qxd1+?! 28.Kxd1 Bxf5 as, after 29.Bxf5 exf5, White has 30.Qf4. The engines reckon White would be only slightly better, but the position looks difficult for Black.
However 27...Qa5!? is a reasonable try, although it lets White draw with 28.Ne7+ Kh8 29.Ng6+! Kg8 30.Ne7+
Best is the engines' 27...Qc5!, when White has nothing better than 28.Bxe4, after which comes 28...Qa3+ 29.Qb2 Qxb2+ 30.Kxb2 Rab8+ and 31...exf5.
28.Nd6 Qa6 29.Bxe4 Rab8 30.Bc2
Also winning is 30.Rc2.
30...Qa3+
Not 30...Qxa2?? 31.Bh7+ etc.
31.Kd2 Rb2!?

32.Rc1
Other rook moves also win, but not 32.Nxc4?? Rd8+, eg 33.Kc1 Rxc2+ 34.Kxc2 Qxa2+ 35.Nb2 Rxd1 36.Kxd1 Qb1+ and 37...Qxb2+ etc.
32...Rd8 33.Qf4 Rxd6!?
Desperation, but also going down easily is 33...Rd7 34.h6 gxh6 35.gxh6 etc.
34.exd6 Qc5 35.Rf1 Qd5 36.Kc1 Rxc2+?!
Hopeless, but 36...Rb7 37.g6 f6 38.d7!? Qxd7 39.Rd1 Qe7 40.Qd6 Qxd6 41.Rxd6 Kf8 42.Rd8+ Ke7 43.Rg8 Kd6 44.Rxg7! Rxg7 45.h6 is just one of many winning lines for White.
37.Kxc2 Qd3+ 38.Kb2 Qe2+ 39.Ka3 f5 40.gxf6 e5 41.Qf5 Qe3 42.f7+ 1-0
