Springing Into Action

MY tournament plans for the next three months are more-or-less finalised, but with a major query in May.

Mar 14-16: Fareham, Hampshire. Six-round weekender, although I am taking a bye on the Saturday afternoon.

Mar 21-29: Bad Wörishofen, Bavaria. Nine rounds over nine days, I am playing in the seniors, but there is also an open and an U2000.

Apr 11-19: Bad Soden, Hesse. Nine rounds over nine days - seniors only.

Apr 24-28: Kenilworth, Warwickshire. English Seniors Championship in two sections: 65+ and 50+. Seven rounds over five days, but I am taking byes on the two double-round days.

May 3-5: Daventry, Northamptonshire. Hoping to play for Wessex in the Four Nations Chess League.

May 12-18: Großschönau, Saxony. I would love to play in this seven-round seniors' tournament, but getting there from London seems a nightmare, involving at least three changes of buses/trains (as well as flights).
The following details are from Tim Harding's seniors' calendar:
32nd Upper Lusatian Senior Championships, close to the Czech border. Details available (PDF in German). There will be one tournament but with separate prize lists for the age groups 60+ and 70+. Women aged 55+ can also enter. Played over 7 rounds using the slower FIDE time limit where players get an extra 30 minutes after the 40th move. Morning play except for round 1.

May 25-31: Bregenz, Austria. Seven rounds of senior chess over seven mornings. There is also a nine-round open, starting a day earlier and finishing a day later, with play mainly in the afternoons.

  1. Have you considered flying to Berlin to get to Großschönau? It's quite a long journey but would, at least, mean you could get all the way there by train (Flughafen Berlin Bahnhof -> Dresden Bahnhof Neustadt -> Zittau Bahnhof -> Großschönau (Sachs) Bahnhof).

    1. Yes, thank you, I think that might be my best option. It means four(!) trains, which will be a pain in the neck. One way of ameliorating this might be to fly to Berlin, stay overnight in a hotel, and take the trains the following day (and vice versa when coming back).

    2. Correction! Three trains, not four, from Berlin to Grosschoenau

  2. Berlin is Proberbly the best option. From Prague is more complicated with trains and buses. And indeed when you take your time for the journey its maybe not so bad at all.
C you next week in B.W.

  3. Thanks. I did look at Prague, but, as you say, connections from there are even more convoluted than from Berlin.
