The Tobacco Mosque is near the chess-venue Maritim Hotel |
It was built from 1907-1909 to a plan by architect Martin Hammitzsch, who later wed Angela Hitler, the elder half-sister of a better-known AH.
The owner was Jewish businessman Hugo Zietz, who wanted a cigarette factory that was practical on the inside but on the outside advertised the fact he imported top-quality tobacco from the Ottoman Empire.
The building, which was quickly dubbed the Tobacco Mosque, fell into disuse after WW2 but was restored in the 1990s and is now offices.
