Gwilym Price (2110/198) - Spanton (1951/168)
Sicilian Accelerated Dragon
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.Be3 Nf6 7.Bc4 0-0 8.Bb3 d5!?
This move goes back to the 1960s, but has been championed relatively recently by grandmaster Boris Gelfand, and recommended on a ChessBase dvd by GM Nadezhda Kosintseva.
The traditional Accelerated remedy of 8...a5 is under a cloud, while GM Chris Ward, in his commentary at Hastings, suggested transposing to a regular Dragon with 8...d6.
Many other moves are possible, eg world champion Magnus Carlsen played 8...Re8!? in 2018.
9.exd5 Na5 10.h3!?
This has been tried by players rated well over 2500, but seems slow. GP said in the postmortem he played it to prevent ...Ng4. Theory is very much still evolving, but the mainline in ChessBase's 2020 Mega database runs 10.0-0 Nxb3 11.Nxb3 b6 12.Qd2 Bb7 13.Rad1, which is a better-for-White version of the game continuation.
10...Nxb3 11.Nxb3 b6 12.Qd2 Bb7 13.Rd1
This seems to be new. 13.0-0-0 is a known move.
13...Qc7
The positioning of White's queen in front of the queen's rook makes this an attractive alternative to 13...Qd7, which also seems fine for Black.
14.d6?!
How should Black meet the threat to his queen? |

White's 14th move is a common idea in some lines of the Sicilian - White returns his extra pawn, but inflicts a permanent weakness on Black. Except that here, Black does not have to capture immediately. White should probably have settled for 14.0-0 Rfd8, when Black's bishop-pair may give a small edge.
14...Qxd6
Stockfish10 and Komodo10 give 14...Qc6!, when 15.dxe7 Qxg2 16.exf8Q+ Rxf8 17.Rf1 Ba6 18.Ne2 Ne4 looks strong for Black. Therefore White has to play 15.f3, and Black is better after 15...Rfd8.
15.Qxd6 exd6 16.0-0 Rfd8 17.a4
GP's postmortem suggestion of 17.Bd4 looks promising. The engines reckon 17.Rfe1 gives White a slight pull.
17...Ne4
Pre-empting White's threatened pawn-thrust a5.
18.Nxe4 Bxe4 19.Nd4 ½–½
Black wins a pawn with 19...Bxd4 20.Rxd4 Bxc2, but the engines reckon the position is dead-equal after, for example, 21.Rc1 Rac8 22.a5 bxa5 23.Rd2 Bb3 24.Rxc8 Rxc8 25.Rxd6.
