I HAVE just discovered from the English Chess Forum that Robert Wildig (1944-2020) of Rugby has died.
There is a temporary obituary at http://rugbychessclub.blogspot.com/ with a fuller version promised.
I cannot claim to have known him well, and we only played once, but I suspect many who may not have played him will recognise him from the photo that forms part of the online obit.
Here is the one time we played.
Wildig (178 BCF) - Spanton (161 BCF)
Letchworth (Herts) Rapid 1994
English
1.c4 e6 2.g3 d5 3.b3 Nf6 4.Bb2 c5 5.Bg2 Nc6 6.Nf3?!
This is the most-common move in ChessBase's 2020 Mega database, but I suspect White should prevent Black's next, for example by 6.cxd5 exd5 7.Nf3. Black can still play 7...d4, but the black position is looser than after the game continuation. Paul Keres - Alexander Kotov, USSR Championship (Moscow) 1949, continued 8.0-0 Be7 9.Na3 0-0 10.Nc4 with a roughly level game, as was confirmed in Wesley So (2780) - Levon Aronian (2767), St Louis Rapid 2018, and several other high-level games.
6...d4 7.0-0 Be7 8.d3 0-0 9.Nbd2 e5
Position after 9...e5 |
10.Ne1 Bg4 11.h3 Bh5 12.a3
Peter Hammer - Günther Möhring, Bucharest 1976, went 12.Nc2 Qd7 13.Qe1 Bg6 14.a3 Nh5 15.Bc1 Rae8 16.b4 b6 17.Nf3 Qc7 with Black quickly crashing through in the centre (0-1, 27 moves).
12...Qd6 13.Nc2 a5 14.Rb1 Rae8 15.Bc1 Nd7 16.b4!?
A temporary pawn-sac to gain breathing room.
16...axb4 17.axb4 cxb4 18.Ne4 Qc7 19.g4 Bg6 20.f4?!
Playing on the flank where the opponent is stronger is usually double-edged.
20...f5 21.gxf5 Bxf5 22.fxe5 Ndxe5 23.Bf4 Qd7 24.Kh2 Bd6?!
This throws away most of Black's advantage. The analysis engines Stockfish12 and Komodo11.01 reckon Black is much better after any reasonable continuation, eg 24...Bxe4 25.Bxe4 Ng6 26.Bg3 Bd6 with a strong attack.
25.Nxd6 Qxd6 26.Qd2 Qe7?
Black is still better after 26...Qg6, according to the engines.
27.Nxb4 Nxb4 28.Rxb4 Ng6 29.Rxb7 Qxe2 30.Rb2??
The game is equal after 30.Rf2 or 30.Qxe2, according to the engines.
30...Bxd3 0-1
White is losing a massive amount of material.
