Summing Up Tegernsee

MY score of +4=1-4  in the Senioren Cup for players born before 1975 gained 32.2 Fide elo.
There was late drama when, relaxing after the tournament, Lufthansa texted me to say they had cancelled my 14:45 plane today from Munich airport.
Instead they offered me a late-evening flight, which I declined as I was able to make a late-afternoon booking with British Airways.
I am hoping the £242 cost will be covered to a large extent by a refund and compensation from Lufthansa, although I will not be surprised if somehow I do not qualify for compensation.

  2. Torquay is open to anyone. Good venue, interesting seaside town in a very British way, decent time of year to be in Devon.

  4. There are worse places to visit, and the tournament should be fairly friendly, with opportunities for socialising after games if wanted.

    2. There is a pub in the main street nearby that players tend to congregate in - of course I cannot remember it now, but perhaps The Castle?

    3. The Wetherspoons on the High Street in the centre of town is the Green Ginger which is popular. Nearby to the hotel complex where the tournament takes place is the Bull and Bush pub.

  5. It might be too late to do it now, but, if there was a BA flight with availability that would have got you back to Heathrow (I assume) before the next available Lufthansa flight to Heathrow then Lufthansa should have booked you on the BA flight themselves, at no cost to you. That's what you should have told Lufthansa you wanted them to do. If they'd refused, you'd then have had grounds for booking it yourself and claiming the cost back from Lufthansa. If what you actually did was decline their offer of a Lufthansa flight and tell them you'd make your own arrangements to get home they don't have to pay for the BA flight. All they have to do is refund the cost of the cancelled Lufthansa flight, which I assume was less than the replacement BA flight cost.

    1. Thanks, but are you sure? I thought cancellations meant compensation, rather as a 3+hour delay does?

  6. Maybe I wasn't clear. Yes, you should get compensation for the delay getting you home (assuming the cancellation wasn't due to exceptional circumstances). As well as that, Lufthansa should have booked you on the first available flight back to Heathrow operated by any airline. If they tried to book you on a later Lufthansa flight you could have said no, you want them to book you on the earlier BA flight. That way, they pay for the BA flight, not you. If you'd asked for this and Lufthansa refused then you'd have grounds for booking the BA flight yourself and claiming the cost back from Lufthansa because they would have failed to offer you "re-routing to your final destination at the earliest opportunity" as required by the regulations.

  7. Ahh, I think I get your point now. That sounds more promising - and I'd be happy just not to lose out money-wise.
