AM making my final preparations for the Olomouc summer chess festival, which starts on Saturday as part of the CzechTour.
As well as the seniors, which I have entered, there is an open, three round-robin norm tournaments, a rapid and a blitz.
I usually fly with Ryanair to Brno, and get a train connection from there. But I have become so fed up with the way the airline treats passengers at Brno that this time I am flying with British Airways to Prague.
It will make for a longer train connection, but a less stressful - and earlier-in-the-day - return, industrial action permitting.
Olomouc is a university city - it feels more like a large town - that used to be an important centre of the Greater Moravian Empire.
When the rest of Europe was getting piped water as a matter of routine, the local authorities did not trust it, and so Olomouc is still dotted with squares whose main focus is an elaborate fountain.
As well as the Olomouc chess festival, I have played at four other CzechTour events: Brno, Hradec Kralove, Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad) and the Highlands Open (Trebic). I can thoroughly recommend all of them as good-value, well-organised foreign options.
