Two nine-round tournaments, plus side-events, are being held over eight days at a smart hotel against a background of a frozen lake and snow-covered countryside (I know the setting as I played last year when the festival was held in April).
The main event is a GM Swiss, which includes 14 grandmasters, but also has players rated under 1900.
I have entered the Open Swiss, which has 49 players rated from 1450-2044.
The time control in both tournaments is 40 moves in 100 minutes, followed by 40 minutes to finish, plus a 30-second increment throughout.
The list of participants shows a wide range of nationalities in the GM tournament, while the Open has just seven non-Norwegians.
The town's webcam makes interesting viewing.
