Young Champion

THE Bad Wörishofen U2000 was won by a Switzerland-registered junior (born 2010), Ziad Kanana, whose score of +7=1-1 gained 123.6 Fide elo.
In the following game he shows an unusual way to meet a black defence that is still popular at club level.
The opening experiment, if such is what it was, can hardly be called a success, at least not at first, but as soon as the tactics start there is only one player in it.

Ziad Kanana (1918) - Michael Walda (1948)
Elephant Gambit
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5!? 3.Nc3!?
Much more popular are 3.Nxe5 and 3.exd5, but the text, which emphasises development, has also been tried by grandmasters.
3...dxe4
The engines reckon 3...d4 gives Black at least the better side of equality.
4.Nxe4 f5 5.Nc3 e4 6.Ne5 Qd4 7.f4
Dieter Schatz (2218) - Dieter Pirrot* (2401), Bad Wiessee (Bavaria) 2005, continued 7.Nc4 Bc5, after which 8.Qh5+ is unclear - Stockfish16 gives White a slight edge, but Komodo14.1 reckons Black is at least equal. Instead the game saw 8.Ne3 Nf6 9.Nb5? (better is 9.d3, but Black has the upper hand, according to the engines) Qe5 10.b4?! (this does not help, but the engines reckon White is already lost anyway) Bxe3 11.dxe3 Qxa1 12.Nxc7+ Ke7 13.b5? Qc3+ 14.Qd2 Qxc7 15.Ba3+ Kf7 16.Bd6 Qd8 0-1.
7....Be6 8.Nb5 Qb6 9.Qh5+ g6 10.Nxg6
How should Black proceed?

10...Bf7?
White is also better after 10...Nf6 11.Qh4, so best is 10...hxg6!, when 11.Qxh8 (11.Qxg6+? Kd7 leaves White with insufficient compensation for a knight) sees White up the exchange and a pawn. But after 11...Nc6 Black will quickly castle queenside, enjoying a lead in development and attacking chances against a white king precariously uncastled - full compensation, according to the engines.
11.Qxf5 Bxg6?!
Probably better, but still horrible, is 11...hxg6.
12.Qe5+ Kd8 13.Qxh8 Qe6
Not much better is 13...Bf7 14.Qxh7.
14.f5! Bxf5 15.Nd4 Qf7 16.Nxf5 Nd7
Black is a rook and pawn down and could resign with a clear conscience, but perhaps thought there might be a way to trap the white queen

17.Ne3!?
Coolly done.
The game finished:
17...Ndf6 18.Bc4 Qe7 19.Nd5 Nxd5 20.Qxg8 Nf6 21.Qf7 Qd6 22.Qe6 1-0
*The same Dieter Pirrot who won this year's Bad Wörishofen seniors' tournament.
