River Chess

NO, River Chess is not the name of a new chess variant, but of a chalk stream rising in the Chilterns near Chesham, Bucks, running to Rickmansworth, Herts.
The Chess near Rickmansworth
I was beside it yesterday when I joined a 10-mile circular walk organised by South Bank Ramblers.
The name of the river has no connection with chess the game, but is derived from the name of the town near where it starts.
The walk's leader told me he is from Orpington and played chess at college, reaching the semi-final of a knockout championship held there.
By coincidence I am due to play for Hastings & St Leonards today in the semi-final of the Kent League 155 average … against Petts Wood & Orpington.
