Benidorm U2000 Round Four

FACED a player from Guernsey.

Spanton (1743) - Keith Flanagan (1474)
Sicilian Nimzowitsch
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nf6!? 3.e5 Nd5 4.c4!?
More popular in ChessBase's 2024 Mega database are 4.c3, 4.d4 and especially 4.Nc3!?
4...Nc7!?
One of the ideas of this move, which is much more common than 4...Nb6, is that the knight can take up a more-central location at e6.
5.d4 cxd4 6.Nxd4 Nc6 7.Bf4!?
Stockfish16 and Komodo14.1 prefer 7.f4 or 7.Nxc6!?
7...Ne6?!
This may be a novelty, and probably not a good one. Savielly Tartakower chose 7...g6 in a 1929 game at Scarborough, while another promising line is 7...Nxd4 8.Qxd4 Ne6.
8.Nxe6 dxe6 9.Qxd8+ Nxd8
White's lead in development and superior pawn-structure add up to a substantial advantage

10.Nc3 f6
The engines slightly prefer 10...Nc6, but reckon 11.Nb5 Rb8 12.Be3 gives White at least the upper hand.
11.Nb5 g5?
Better, but hardly appealing, is 11...Kf7.
12.Be3 Kd7? 13.0-0-0+ 1-0
Resignation is not premature. After 13...Kc6 Black gets mated by White's light-square bishop, while 13...Ke8 14.Nc7+ Kf7 15.Rxd8 is almost as bad.
