IN this series I am looking at the statistically best way to play against popular opening lines.
The numbers are drawn from the 2021 edition of ChessBase's Mega database, ignoring, where possible, those results that include very few games and so are statistically insignificant.
The Catalan: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.g3 is a slow-burn opening in which Black is not under immediate pressure, but can easily play sensible-looking developing moves without a proper plan and land in big trouble in the early middlegame.
Black's commonest reply, 4...Be7, scores just 37%, but 4...dxc4 scores an impressive 47%.
Position after 4...dxc4 |
A) 5.Bg2 (10,245 games)
Black has several popular responses, but best statistically is 5...a6, which scores 49%, after which the line splits.
A1 6.0-0 Nc6, after which the line splits again.
A1.1 7.e3 Rb8, with another split: A1.1a 8.Nfd2!? Qd7 9.Nxc4 b5 scores 53% for Black; A1.1b 8.Qe2 b5 9.b3 cxb3 10.axb3 Bd6 scores 56% for Black.

Black scores 80% with 12...Nd7, which is the choice of the analysis engines Stockfish13 and Komodo12.1.1, but the sample size is small; A1.2b 9.d5 Nb4 10.Ne5 exd5 11.exd5 Bf5 12.a3 Nd3 13.Nxc4 0-0 scores 63% for Black.
