IN this series I am looking at the statistically best way to play against popular opening lines.
The numbers are drawn from the 2021 edition of ChessBase's Mega database, ignoring, where possible, those results that include very few games and so are statistically insignificant.
The starting point of the Morra Gambit comes after White meets 1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 with 3.c3 (Paul Morphy used to play at this point 3.Nf3 with a likely transposition to mainline Sicilians).
After 2.d4, Black's best reply statistically is indeed 2...cxd4, which scores 54%, and after 3.c3 Black scores an excellent 58% with 3...g6 but even this is beaten by the 59% Black scores with 3...Nf6, which takes us to lines covered under A in https://beauchess.blogspot.com/2021/04/beat-sicilian-alapin.html
